Continuity is the evidence. A programme with honest gaps outranks one with suspicious perfection.

The workable version is a negotiation between the strictest customer requirement and the interval the team will actually meet in a busy quarter. Pick the second one, write it down, and treat any shortening as a deliberate upgrade with a reason attached.

Verifying that the standard still means something is its own routine. An aging test run on a sample after a maintenance cycle answers a question no checklist can: whether the intervention actually restored performance or merely touched the right components in the right order.

The Only Window Is Between Changeovers

Contract manufacturing removes the option of a quiet weekend. A line carrying several customers never stops for long enough to be serviced in isolation, so the only reliable window is the interval already set aside for the changeover itself. In that reading, upkeep is not competing with production time, it is competing with nothing, because the line is already down.

What that demands is being explicit about the fifteen minutes: wipe the nozzles, inspect the rails, check the placement head, confirm the feeder positions. Folded into the changeover sheet, those tasks stop needing a separate argument. Left outside it, they need a supervisor to defend them every single week, which is a losing position.

A short written note with a photograph of anything unusual costs two minutes and removes the ambiguity entirely. Teams that train upkeep first and product second tend to have both.
